Project Description: Perkins+Will needed to relocate its office to Durham’s Legacy Tower ASAP. Built in 1965 and noted as one of the tallest buildings in Durham, Legacy Tower is a 14-story high-rise building. Perkins+Will planned to outfit the second floor of the Tower. To outfit the space, existing lighting would be demolished, and new and fresh lighting strategy would be implemented. The total area of the second floor was 12,395 sf with 10,880 sf set aside for total usable space.
Project now featured in a Tech Lighting Brochure.

What factors contributed to the success of this project? The great working relationship of the manufacturer’s sales representative and lighting designer was key. The hands-on involvement and direct line of communication between the two fostered a more invested approach to the execution of the lighting design. In addition, having the architect as the client allowed for immediate by-in and appreciation of the lighting design and a more seamless integration between the architecture and lighting.

What was a unique challenge associated with this project? In addition to the fast-track schedule, the architect proposed an open floor plan with open ceiling. The office space needed to be lit from above with low glare indirect lighting, with few portable task lights. The lighting strategy needed to be inclusive of a comprehensive lighting control system.
